Major Scales
In System 2 Major Scales, we will go through all forms of the CAGED system each week. Every week begins in a different key, going through the major scale in all 12 keys practicing all 5 major scale forms over the 12 weeks. This is important. Often, players are more confident in certain keys. For guitarists, it is typically the sharp keys. This is likely because of the tuning of the instrument. You may notice that oftentimes guitar-based songs are in sharp keys (especially those of our open strings). The sharp keys also happen to coincide well to the dot patterns on the neck.
But in order to become a competent improvisor, it’s more important to see the ‘dots’ or patterns of the CAGED form, not just the dots on the neck. As you feel more confident in the memorization of these forms, try to practice them with your eyes closed.
As you complete this system, you should really begin to understand the geometry of the neck and feel much more confident in knowing all of the core arpeggios and scales.
