System 9 begins the journey into more ADVANCED scales and patterns. The first 4 systems provided the FOUNDATIONS that most guitarists need to be proficient musicians. Systems 5-8, advanced those skills, helping INTERMEDIATE players gain true mastery of the guitar neck.
In Systems 9-12, we will explore ADVANCED harmonic vocabularies; less commonly used scales and patterns–ones often found in jazz, fusion, and prog rock that use more complex harmonic languages.
If you go through System 9 you should find a whole new world of musical vocabulary opening up to you.
In System 9, we will approach 7th arpeggios using 4-note groupings that cover 3 octaves. Once you learn one small pattern, you can apply it over three octaves. We will also learn the Coltrane pentatonic. This is a funky-sounding scale that is often heard in jazz, blues, and funk music. We’ll also practice all modes of the harmonic minor scale. Finally, we will learn the major scale on ONE STRING ONLY! This is challenging, but it’s a great exercise for moving laterally across the neck. With this exercise, you will learn how to play well up and down a string, which will help you escape from “box” playing.
