Modes
In System 4, we will be playing the modes in 3rds, skipping every other note. Obviously, any interesting improvisation is not just linear. In order to be interesting, the improvisor must change directions and note order. This very simple exercise will help you to be able to ‘jump’ to notes in your 3-on-a-note modes. Though this is a very easy exercise, try to push tempos. No matter how easy these exercises are, you can always challenge yourself by increasing speed and focusing on accuracy. Also, try not to pick too deeply, allowing just the very tip of the pick to touch the string. Focus also on being relaxed.
For the first part, we will go through all 7 modes ascending and their adjacent mode descending. For the second part of this system, we will go through all modes in 3rds.
At the end of System 4, you should be gaining real mastery of the most important building blocks of the instrument. If you are diligent in your practice, you will have command of the CAGED system pentatonic scales, the CAGED system major scales, and all 3-On-a-String modes and major and minor arpeggios in guitar playing. As I mentioned in the introduction to the Guitar Daily Workout, it is not mastery of these skills that will make you a great guitar player. Rather, you need to understand how to apply these exercises, and you must learn from other great musicians by practicing their lines and parts. Upon completion of System 4, you can know that you are well on your way to mastering the core competency skills that are vital to becoming a proficient player. Have fun and work hard! It will pay off!
