SYSTEM SIX

Introduction To System Six

Congratulations on getting through System 5–one of the most challenging of the 8 systems. If you’ve progressed through the first five systems, you should find that these exercises are helping you in several areas: understanding the geometry of the guitar neck–really codifying your understanding of the whole neck; building your strength, speed, and dexterity; and increasing your confidence and competence in your playing.

In System 6, we will be exploring some new approaches to ideas we’ve been working on in the other systems.

Finger Gymnastics

In System 6 Finger Gymnastics, you’ll practice stretching your fingers, trying to cleanly play notes with difficult stretches. This forces you to develop good technique so that you don’t get fret buzz or interference from other fingers on your fretting hand. In this exercise, the challenge will come when you put a gap between your second and third fingers. These fingers usually want to point toward each other, so having a one-fret gap between them is hard. As you get lower on the neck toward the nut, the fingering can get really challenging. This exercise will help you to cleanly play any awkward fingerings with stretches.

Arpeggios

For the arpeggios, we will take System 5’s arpeggio exercise to the next level. In System 5, you practiced arpeggios on three string sets. This is an invaluable tool for guitarists, one that will help you immensely in your playing. In System 6, you will still do three string sets, but you will play through all of the major and minor chords in common progressions. For both, you will play arpeggios over the I, IV, and V in the major and minor keys.

Pentatonic and Major Scale

For both the pentatonic scale and major scale, you will take System 5’s three string sets and play them on two strings, which will help you to see the neck laterally rather than in “boxes.” You will then be able to make melodies along the neck while moving seamlessly from position to position.
