WELCOME TO THE GUITAR DAILY WORKOUT

If you’ve always wanted to understand your guitar neck and know your most important scales, arpeggios and exercises for guitar, then there is no better method than the Guitar Daily Workout

12 Books, 2700 Pages, Over 500 Lesson Videos, Over 600 Play-along Videos

The most comprehensive and effective series on guitar technique ever written, in easy-to-follow weekly lessons.

Before I started The Guitar Daily Workout by Dan Shields, my technique improvement felt stagnant. I craved a structured approach to mastering scales, arpeggios, and finger exercises. This series is a game-changer. It’s become my go-to resource for pick-style technique, with fantastic backing tracks that push me further. The Guitar Daily Workout isn’t just a book; it’s a lifelong musical journey that’s earned a permanent spot on my shelf.

– David from CA

Hi, I’m Dan Shields, the author of the Guitar Daily Workout.

When I was a student in music school, I studied with excellent players but kept feeling like I was hitting a wall I couldn’t seem to get over. My goal was to become a full-time professional guitarist, but I wasn’t sure how to get there. Even though I was already teaching students, playing studio sessions, doing gigs, and had a prestigious scholarship to the school I was studying at, I still often felt lost on my instrument. I began to realize that I didn’t know the fundamentals of my instrument well enough. I’d been playing for years and studied hard, I felt like there were certain boxes or patterns on the neck that I was comfortable playing, but I didn’t really know the whole neck and felt insecure in many areas. So, when I improvised, I stayed in the boxes I knew well and didn’t know how to break out of them.

I wanted to get better and was willing to put in the time, but I didn’t know how to get there. When my teachers would say things like, ‘You can just play the mixolydian mode over this chord,’ I understood what they were saying but didn’t have those concepts under my fingers well enough to use them.

Although I had some head knowledge, I didn’t have those things imprinted in my muscle memory and in my ears, and I didn’t see those shapes all across the neck, so I wasn’t able to apply it to real playing.

I felt pretty defeated.

But then, I had an ‘aha’ moment. I’d hear the classical students practicing. They weren’t just learning repertoire songs. They were also practicing exercises that gave them the physical skills to access that very demanding repertoire.

My eyes opened, and I understood how important it was to learn my scales and arpeggios. They were one of the keys to unlocking the mystery of how to get better.

I also knew enough to know that playing scales and exercises alone wouldn’t make me a skilled player. But, like cardio for a basketball player, strength training for a football player, or flexibility for a gymnast, musicians need certain specialized physical skills to enable them to play well.

So, I began to learn those vital exercises. If my teacher said you should learn the CAGED scales to understand the neck, I’d learn them. If I heard a great player say that you needed to know all of your 3-on-a-string modes to get fast, I’d practice them. When someone said you need to know your arpeggios in order to play melodically, I’d try to learn them.

There was a lot of hit-and-miss since there were no really great technique training methods like the classical players had. But, slowly, I began to piece things together. And as I did, the puzzle became more clear to me, and I got better. And I began to see how other great players used those concepts. I was learning how to learn. And I was starting to compile them in a clear and logical way, the way the classical players learned, starting with the most vital fundamentals and progressing through more and more advanced studies.

And that’s how the Guitar Daily Workout was born.

It’s a comprehensive SYSTEM for learning those key foundational exercises.

The Guitar Daily Workout is not the end-all of getting good at the guitar. There’s much more to becoming capable on your instrument than scales and exercises. But, it is a vital part to getting better.

If you’re hitting roadblocks you can’t seem to overcome, this may be an important part of breaking through. It has worked for countless great musicians over the years and can help you become the player you’ve always dreamed of becoming.

What You’ll Learn from the Guitar Daily Workout.

The Guitar Daily Workout is the gold standard for guitar technique studies. It is a clear, comprehensive, and systematic method to learn the most important scales, arpeggios, and exercises on your guitar. It’s an easy-to-follow, easy-to-understand training system of daily exercises for the guitar. Each book has standard notation and TAB, a video lesson for each week’s exercises, and a play-along video.

The Guitar Daily Workout is like a Peloton exercise routine designed specifically for the guitar. It was originally designed to train guitar technique to college students but is for anyone who really wants to master their instrument.

Each System is to be practiced for about 1/2 hour per day 5 days a week for 12 weeks.

With 12 books and over 2700 pages of exercises, 500 Lesson videos, and 600 Play-along videos, it’s the most complete technique study ever made for guitar. But, it is broken up into short, simple and easy-to-follow weekly lessons and arranged in a clear progression that guarantees to work if you put in the work.

I had heard of the CAGED system before, but the Guitar Daily Workout opened my eyes. After a few weeks I was flying around the fretboard like I was doing this for many years. Very well put together!

– Brandon Lee Johnson, College Student

WHO IS IT FOR

The Guitar Daily Workout was originally designed as a systematic and comprehensive training method for college students. But it is really for anyone who wants a clear daily practice routine to learn their essential exercises for guitar so they can learn to improvise and come up with their own guitar parts – not just copy others.

Whether you’re a younger player who wants to train correctly and not waste time or a seasoned player who plays well but has always wanted to learn these essential foundations, the Guitar Daily Workout is the best method out there to learn essential guitar technique.

WHY YOU NEED IT

You’ll hear a lot of guitarists on social media selling their guitar courses, saying things like, ‘You don’t need to learn scales or technique studies to get great on your instrument.’ Then, they promise that you’ll find the secret formula for becoming great if you go through their method. And, though I’m sure many of those methods teach some great things, all truly great musicians will tell you that getting great requires a lot of intentionality and hard work. All guitarists need 3 things to master their instrument. They need to be able to hear certain sounds (EARS), translate those sounds to shapes on their instrument (HEAD), and have the physical skills to play what they hear in their heads (HANDS). And that requires technique, whether it is formally trained or not. The Guitar Daily Workout trains musicians in the most important exercises with a system that progresses in a logical, easy-to-understand way. It’s simply an exercise program for guitar that trains technique.

HOW TO USE THE GUITAR DAILY WORKOUT

The Guitar Daily Workout is a 12 book series, progressing from the most foundational knowledge to advanced concepts. Each week typically has 5 exercises to be practiced for about ½ hour total. All exercises have a PDF in standard notation and TAB, a short, to-the-point video Lesson, and a Play-along video. It is a clear, systematic, and easy-to-follow method for building technique.

WHERE THE GUITAR DAILY WORKOUT CAME FROM

The Guitar Daily Workout originated in understanding how the great classical music programs train students to become world-class musicians. When I was in music school I wanted to learn technique in a systematic way. But, I was frustrated because there weren’t method books like the classical players had that taught technique in a clear, progressive way. This system trains guitar technique in a similar way that classical teachers have used to effectively train technique to virtuoso musicians for centuries.

The Guitar Daily Workout really helped me see the fretboard like I never saw it before. It’s like it was all connecting like a puzzle.

– Sydney, College Student

I’ve played guitar off and on since I was 13. I loved how the Guitar Daily Workout System 1 helped me bridge the basics of arpeggios, pentatonic and major scales, and the theory I’ve learned over the years. It really does what Dan says, gives the basics and builds muscle and brain memory. Highly recommend.

What The Guitar Daily Workout is NOT

The Guitar Daily Workout is not a methodology book. It doesn’t show songs. It doesn’t show riffs or licks or lines. It doesn’t teach how to improvise. It doesn’t show any guitar styles. It doesn’t teach concepts from the guitar greats. It doesn’t even show techniques like sweep picking, hybrid picking, or economy picking (although you can apply all of those to these exercises). What it does, though, is it teaches the fundamental building-blocks of guitar playing so that you can begin to understand and access all of these other things. It will enable you to hear, visualize and play the scales and arpeggios you need to be able to play guitar well. It’s simply an exercise program for the guitar.

As a senior studying electric guitar in college, the Guitar Daily Workout really helped me. I would definitely recommend the program to anyone wanting to become more familiar with the fretboard and increase their playing speed.

There are 12 books in the System. The first 4 are the FOUNDATIONS. These are the essentials that all aspiring guitarists should know.

The next 4 are INTERMEDIATE. They will give a student true mastery of the instrument.

And the last 4 are ADVANCED. They are for players who want to access the scales and techniques needed for advanced musical styles like fusion, jazz, and prog rock.

But even if you only go through the first book, you will be well on your way to finally understanding the guitar.

I am a guitarist who has been playing since I was 7 years old (now mid-60’s and recently retired), I studied for 2 semesters at Berklee and was on the road for 4 years, I’ve found System One to be excellent.

For the player that wants to invest the time and is looking to accurately master the fretboard, the Guitar Daily Workout gives you the foundational practice material that will launch every player a higher skill level allowing you to play with more accuracy. I am looking forward to diving into System Two.

– Tom from FL

I started the Guitar Daily Workout after I graduated from music school. It took many ideas that were previously head-knowledge and made them muscle memory. I would highly recommend the Guitar Daily Workout for anyone looking for a simple practice routine that will provide consistency and growth, no matter what stage of musicianship you are at!

FOUNDATIONS

The essentials that all aspiring guitarists should know.

INTERMEDIATE

These 4 books will give a student true mastery of the instrument.

ADVANCED

This is for players who want to access the scales and techniques needed for advanced musical styles like fusion, jazz, math rock and prog rock.

I spent the first 30+ years of my guitar-playing life as a self-taught guitar player.  I needed a system in order to know that I had covered all the bases and hadn’t missed anything vital. I didn’t know what I didn’t know. How I wish the Guitar Daily Workout existed when I first started playing. It would have saved me years of frustration.

– H.G. from PA

If you want to know which book is right for you,

you can take the simple video test for each System below.

I’m a self taught metal style musician and I have played in many small venue to large national act live shows. I have also recorded my fair share of albums and I consider my ability to play as decently well over the last 20 years.

The Guitar Daily Workout has helped me with quickly locating roots and scale forms all across the neck. I would recommend this system to anyone who would like to get to know their instrument and strengthen their playing.

– Justin from PA

SYSTEM ONE

System One of the Guitar Daily Workout will take the student through the absolutely essential foundations of the instrument, which every guitarist must master to become proficient at their craft.

By the end of System One, you will be able to find every note on the neck quickly and easily, and you will know all of your major arpeggios, the five pentatonic scale forms, and the five major scale forms of the CAGED system and see how they all connect.

System One is the vital starting point for all technique studies on guitar, and it is the place to start if you’ve always wanted to learn your scales and see how they fit together. Find out more.

SYSTEM TWO

In System Two of the Guitar Daily Workout, we will continue the journey we began in System One, because these are the most important things you can learn on the instrument. To become a proficient professional-level musician, you must have total command of these concepts, not just head knowledge, but the physical skills to access and apply them.

System Two will give the student true mastery of the CAGED System. Each week’s exercises will take you through all 5 forms of the arpeggio, pentatonic, and major scale through every key. When you finish the 12 weeks, you will be able to play your five pentatonic and major scales across the entire neck, in any key, and connect them seamlessly. Find out more.

SYSTEM THREE

System Three of the Guitar Daily Workout continues the most important fundamentals of scale and arpeggio practice. Once you finish System Three, you will be well on your way to mastering the FOUNDATIONS of guitar playing. These capabilities are the primary building blocks toward learning to improvise and are vital to guitar mastery.

In System Three, you will learn how to find every diatonic interval on the neck. You will also learn every arpeggio for all chords in the major scale in one position on the neck (perhaps the most essential skill to master to play melodically). You will practice playing all 5 forms of the pentatonic scale in four-note groupings in every key each week. You will learn all 7 forms of the three-on-a-string modes, perhaps the most important scale to learn in order to play fast on the instrument. Find out more.

SYSTEM FOUR

System Four completes the FOUNDATIONAL books of the Guitar Daily Workout. By the end of System Four, you will know the most important scales, arpeggios, and exercises on the instrument (and probably know more than 95% of guitarists regarding technique studies).

We all know that being great at scales doesn’t make us great guitarists. But it does give the essential building blocks to become one. Without these skills, you may feel lost or insecure when you play. But, if you master these skills, you will have confidence in understanding the guitar neck, and you’ll have the physical skills you need to play what you hear in your head.

By the end of System Four, you will be able to play every diatonic interval on the neck from fingers 1, 2, and 4. You will know all the diatonic arpeggio shapes in any key and every position. We will continue to dive into the pentatonic scale since it is such a vital scale to master, practicing playing every other note. You will also master all of the 3-on-a-string modes of your major scale in any key and be able to connect them all together across the neck.

If you complete these first four Systems, you can know that you have true proficiency in your FOUNDATIONS and are on the way to mastering your instrument. Find out more.

SYSTEM FIVE

System Five of the Guitar Daily Workout begins the INTERMEDIATE studies that will help you gain true mastery of your instrument.

If you’ve completed the first four Systems, you should have competence in most of the key FOUNDATIONAL skills required by a guitarist. And you should feel very confident in your understanding and technical capabilities.

Of course, to become a complete guitarist, you need more than just exercises, scales, and arpeggios. You will need to learn to apply these skills to real-world playing, and you must learn a musical vocabulary by transcribing other guitarists. However, you should already be seeing the power of these systems–how they help you not only to develop the physical skills necessary but also connect the neck in a way that allows you to visualize the octaves, arpeggios, pentatonics, and major scales of whatever key you are in.

In System Five, we will push into some new territory. All of the scale and arpeggio exercises will be done using three-string sets. This change will force you to see smaller patterns of your scales and arpeggios rather than the larger ‘boxes’ we’ve practiced in the first four systems, a skill that all virtuoso guitarists have. So, you will be able to visualize and play all of your major scales, arpeggios, and pentatonics on 3-string-sets. To give you a fair warning: System Five will likely be one of the most challenging of the first eight systems. But if you can complete System Five, it will take your guitar playing to another level. At the end of this system, you should sense growing mastery of the guitar neck. Find out more.

SYSTEM SIX

System Six of the Guitar Daily Workout is the second book of the INTERMEDIATE series. If you’ve completed the first five Systems, you will find that these exercises are helping you in several areas: First, understanding and being able to visualize the geometry of the whole guitar neck-associating chord shapes with scale forms. Second, it helps build your strength, speed, accuracy, and dexterity, thus increasing your confidence and competence in your playing. And third, you should hear these sounds more clearly in your head. (Mind, hands and ears.)

In System Six, we will explore some new approaches to ideas we’ve been working on in System Five. System Six we will learn to utilize the 3-string-set arpeggios over chord changes in both major and minor keys. We will also learn the pentatonic and major scale using just 2 strings. Lastly, we will learn to play the pentatonic scale in 5-note groupings, an approach that many of the greats use to cover more range with more speed across the neck. Find out more.

SYSTEM SEVEN

In System Seven of the Guitar Daily Workout, we will delve into some brand-new harmonic language. Your playing and concepts after this System will become much more sophisticated, and your hearing will also develop and broaden.

If you have gone through the first 6 books, you should now have a great deal of mastery of your major scales, modes, pentatonics, and arpeggios. As with all of these systems, System Seven will push you into new territory, tackling more complex arpeggios, scales, and pentatonics. Your harmonic language will begin to expand, and your musical vocabulary will as well.

In System Seven, we will begin a journey into 7th chords. You will learn all the 7th chords arpeggios across the neck. We will also practice the Dominant Pentatonic scale, which is particularly useful in playing the blues. And we will delve into the Major and Minor hexatonic scales. The Hexatonic scale is probably the most musically useful scale for improvising in popular music. By the end of this book, your harmonic acumen will greatly increase. Find out more.

What will you learn in System Seven

SYSTEM EIGHT

System Eight of the Guitar Daily Workout is the last book of the INTERMEDIATE series. Though books 5-8 are called intermediate, the student will have gained real mastery of the most important scales and arpeggios on the guitar upon completing this series. Most who undergo this training will know their guitar neck better than 99% of players. And, though mastery of scales, arpeggios, and exercises don’t in and of themselves make someone a great guitarist, they certainly are the primary building blocks to becoming one.

In System Eight, we will take the 7th arpeggios we learned in System Seven and learn to play them all in one position; a vital tool for improvising, especially in jazz. We will also learn 3-on-a-string pentatonics, which will not only stretch your hands but also teach you a new way to play pentatonics that will allow you to use a more legato approach, thus increasing your speed dramatically. Finally, we will tackle hexatonic scales again, but each week, we will play all forms across the neck in a different key. Since the hexatonic is possibly the most useful scale in music for improvisation across most musical styles, we will try to master this scale.

If you complete all 8 Systems, you should feel confident on your instrument. It is like becoming a Black Belt in karate. You will probably know your scales and arpeggios better than most players graduating from music school. (Again, applying these ideas is what makes a good player, not simply knowing them.) By the end of System Eight, you will have achieved something few players ever attain, and you should also be extremely confident in your skills, especially if you’ve been learning to apply these skills in real-world situations. You will have mastery of the most important building blocks needed to become a very capable musician. Find out more.

SYSTEM NINE

System Nine of the Guitar Daily Workout begins the journey into more ADVANCED scales and patterns. The first 4 systems provided the FOUNDATIONS that most guitarists need to be proficient musicians, the essential skills all improvising guitarists need. Systems 5-8, the INTERMEDIATE series, advanced those skills, helping players gain true mastery of the guitar neck.

In Systems 9-12, we will explore ADVANCED harmonic vocabularies, less commonly used scales and patterns–ones often found in jazz, fusion, and math/prog rock that use more complex harmonic languages.

If you complete System Nine you should find a whole new world of musical vocabulary opening up to you.

In System Nine, we will approach 7th arpeggios using 4-note groupings that cover 3 octaves. Once you learn one small pattern, you can apply it over three octaves. We will also learn the Coltrane pentatonic, a funky-sounding scale often heard in jazz, blues, and funk music. We’ll also practice all modes of the harmonic minor scale. Finally, we will learn the major scale on ONE STRING ONLY! This is challenging, but it’s a great exercise for moving laterally across the neck. With this exercise, you will learn how to play well up and down a string, which will help you escape from “box” playing. Find out more.

SYSTEM TEN

System Ten of the Guitar Daily Workout is the 2nd book of the ADVANCED series. This series is for guitarists who want to learn the scales, arpeggios, and exercises needed to learn the complex musical vocabulary in jazz, prog rock, or fusion. In System Ten we will learn the harmonized harmonic minor scale for the arpeggio study. We will also continue studying the immensely useful Coltrane pentatonic scale, playing all 5 forms in different keys each week. We will practice the modes of the harmonic minor scale, this time doing it in 3rds. Lastly, we will also return to our study of playing the major scale on one string, practicing every mode each week.

These exercises can be challenging, but if you continue with the advanced series, you will learn the advanced scales needed for more complex musical styles, giving you the necessary skills to become a virtuoso musician. Find out more.

SYSTEM ELEVEN

System Eleven of the Guitar Daily Workout is the 3rd book of the Advanced series. In System Eleven, we will press into some brand-new material.

For this system, we will approach the 7th chord arpeggios in small 4-note patterns, going through each of the chords of the harmonized scale in a single position, which will help us to see all the arpeggios in smaller shapes, allowing us to quickly outline chord shapes in our improvisation. Many jazz guitarists see this as one of the most important exercises on the guitar.

We’ll also learn all of the modes of the melodic minor scale. And we’ll learn all forms of the diminished scale. Lastly, we will practice all modes of the major scale in going up and down the neck octaves, which is a very difficult but vitally important skill, especially for those interested in playing jazz.

Once you finish System Eleven of the Guitar Daily Workout, you should have gained a level of understanding and ability to learn and understand the sophisticated vocabularies used in jazz, fusion, and prog rock music. Find out more.

SYSTEM TWELVE

System Twelve of the Guitar Daily Workout is the last book of the ADVANCED series, designed to give the student a grasp of the complex scales and arpeggios of jazz, fusion, and prog rock. In System Twelve, we will begin with a Finger Gymnastic exercise to strengthen our fingers for legato playing, an essential technique when playing over fast tempos. In addition, we will play through all of the chords of the harmonized Melodic Minor scale in all of its forms. We will also learn the 6th Diminished scale (commonly known as the Bebop scale), a very useful scale for playing over jazz changes. Lastly, we’ll learn all of the forms of the whole-tone scale.

If you finish the last 4 books of the Guitar Daily Workout series, you will have a deep understanding of the most important scales and arpeggios of the instrument and be able to approach the most complex aspects of guitar playing. And if you’ve completed all 12 books, you will have a deeper understanding of guitar scales than almost all guitarists on the planet! You might not yet be a virtuoso guitarist, but you will have all the technical understanding needed to become one! Find out more.
